Program Notes: The title Shards refers to several musical aspects of this piece. Ideas are presented, broken apart, recombined, and juxtaposed sharply with disparate ideas. The word “shards” also connotes the presence both of jagged edges and round, flowing lines, which are contrasting elements in the work.
