The Cracking of the Stone Table
Instrumentation: Violin and piano
Year composed: 1998
Place composed: Colorado Springs, CO
Awards: First place (in age division), Pikes Peak Young Composers Competition
Program Notes: The Cracking of the Stone Table is based on a scene from C.S. Lewis’ novel The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe where Aslan the lion is killed on the Stone Table. When Aslan is raised from the dead, the Stone Table cracks. The first section of the piece is like a dirge mourning Aslan’s death; in the middle of the piece there is a loud chord which signifies the cracking of the table, and the final section of the piece is a triumphal march, describing the joy of his resurrection and his victory over death.
